We continue to grow and have great fun since SwitchHits.com was launched in January 1997. From the moment the idea was first hatched, we've been committed to fulfilling our mission - to offer one central resource that has the world's largest selection of unique, handmade, 'Oh, WOW!' light switchplates (no plastic or decoupage). We've crossed the country dozens of times searching for and finding artists who meet our...and your high standards…for hard to find switchplates.
A lot has happened in the past year. We had an ideal setup on the Gulf Coast. Switch Hits was headquartered on Perdido Key, FL where we processed and packed orders against the backdrop of the Gulf of Mexico. We lived just down the road in a great beach condo in Orange Beach, AL. And then Hurricane Ivan came with a direct hit on both our residence and Switch Hits office/warehouse. Each property lost parts of the roof, was condemned, and eventually leveled. Good news is no one got hurt.
We actually scurried out of town before the eye hit...with only the clothes on our back and Switch Hits server (computer). Our 50,000 switchplates protected in steel cabinets were in perfect condition when we were finally allowed to retrieve them 2 months later. We lost minimal items that were on shelves open to the elements. Officials condemned the buildings, but that did not keep us down. Our computers were set up in our hometown outside of Buffalo, NY. All but 2 of our artists and manufacturers were willing to ship direct from their warehouses. In 2 days we were back in business shipping orders. Our deepest gratitude to our suppliers (except for 2). Two months after Hurricane Ivan hit officials finally allowed us to retrieve our property. Our switchplate inventory was moved from the shores of the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of Lake Erie. The new shop had a great view of the water and Canada but was too small for our operation. We have now moved to new buildings pictured above...our final move. We have almost 2 acres to add additional buildings as Switch Hits continues to grow.We hope that Switch Hits online store continues to be quick, friendly, efficient and easy to navigate. We've built the website to be many things to many people--clean and neat, simple and stylish, friendly and smart.
